General Information Regarding Linedefs

For precisely the same reasons as above, I'm going to start adding in general information back into pages, like mentioning that a control sector is necessary. I'm doing it so that the pages won't be as confusing to everyone who's just starting out. However, I'm also going to split the "setup" section into two parts: "general", and "properties". Fawfulfan 15:17, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I personally don't have problems with that, but I wanted to make some general comments on the Linedef Types pages setup. First off, I think the "Notable Uses" section (where it applies) can be incorporated into the first paragraph. It's too short to warrant a separate header, and it fits quite well as general information, as it gives an impression what to expect from that linedef type.
Next up, the Properties section is a great idea, and I guess we could specify this even further by making a table for each linedef type that lists all properties and flags and how they affect the usage. This was already implemented on one page, but I can't find it right now, so I'll look later. I'll also try coming up with a layout for said table. --SpiritCrusher 16:07, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
I am actually not a huge fan of the table setup. I like it when it's used for linedefs that have really complex specifications, like Custom 3D Block, but other than that, I think that the excessive use of tables would be kind of awkward. I like the amount of tables we have now. Fawfulfan 20:02, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
Actually, I don't want to remove the prose explanations in favor of tables. Prose is the perfect way for explaining things if people don't already know about a linedef effect. But if you already know how the linedef type works, and just want a quick reminder on how to apply a specific effect, a table is simply more helpful. Of course we don't need it if the effect is really simple (see Enable/Disable 2D Mode), but for more complicated specials with many different flags usages and parameters, a table is good for getting a quick overview. I think we should best decide this on a case-by-case basis. --SpiritCrusher 20:14, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Idea: New Template "Files Marked to be Renamed"

I'd like to propose a new template, "Files Marked to be Renamed", so we can used it every time someone uploads a wad file or an image with an inconsistent or improper file name (specially the ones with uploader's name), since we non-maintainers can't rename it by ourselves. Regards. --Ezer'Arch|עֶזֶר'AρχTalk 02:27, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm fine with that. I would probably catch all files that have to be renamed without such a template, but that might make my work somewhat easier. Do you know how to make such a template or should I do one myself? --SpiritCrusher 06:15, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Actually, I changed my mind. We don't really need such a template, since I regularly patrol recent changes and would find and rename such files anyway. Should I miss one out, you can just drop me a note --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 09:06, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
No problem. --Ezer'Arch|עֶזֶר'AρχTalk 16:19, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

To Post, or not to Post

Hi again, SpiritCrusher. I`ve recently added an newbie mapping tutorial. It is avaliable at my profile. But, can I add that to the walktrough section? I think it`s useful enough to do so. Regards, Dailsthunder. Posted at 10 April 2010, 3:01 PM (GMT -6). Talk about me here.

Have you seen the SRB2 Doom Builder tutorial? It already contains all that information and even more. Thanks anyway for your input. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 21:31, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Restructuring Thing Types and Sector Types Pages

You know how pages on linedefs are named according to their linedef number, but pages on sectors and Things are named according to the name of their effect? I think that, for the sake of consistency, we should change it so that all of them are named in accordance with their number. However, we could also have redirect pages that make it so that if you look up one of those effects by name, you still get to the right page.

In this vain, I think we also need a convention for naming samples associated with these two other types. Here are my proposals:

  • Sector effects: "ex_s(number)_(name)"
  • Thing types: "ex_t(number)_(name)"

I realize that it would be ridiculous to have samples for every single Thing type, but some of them are complicated and would benefit from having samples.

I just want to know your opinion before going ahead with such an ambitious project.Fawfulfan 13:24, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

I don't know if that would actually be more helpful for people looking these specials up. See, Thing Types and Sector Type are displayed in the SRB2DB config primarily by name, while Linedef Types are displayed primarily by number. Because of this, giving the number for the Linedef Types is more helpful, and giving the names for the Things and Sector Types is also more helpful. But still, we could redirects the numbers to the names, so that people can find the specials either way.
Regarding the samples, I've already started with the Sector Type samples here, and I've used "ex_stXXX_specialname". That's essentially the same as your idea anyway. Regarding the Things, I planned to look through them at a later date, there are indeed a few ones that need samples, like the Axe. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 13:44, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm aware of that...but there are two reasons why I disagree with your logic. First, all three of them are displayed readily by both name and number in SRB2DB. Second, this wouldn't change things for people trying to look these things up by name, because I would add redirect pages. For example, the "Ice/Sludge" page would be renamed "Sector Type 256", but there would also be a redirect page entitled "Ice/Sludge" which would send anyone who types that to the "Sector Type 256" page. Fawfulfan 13:50, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
Hmm, either way, these pages actually were once named "Thing Type X" instead of their name, but that was changed, so I guess there was a reason for that. I'm gonna ask Rob about that. Also, I personally find the names to be much more descriptive and helpful, so I don't see a reason for changing them. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 13:53, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

This was one of my concerns when dealing with thing names and sector names too. The issue is that going by name is very difficult to do when the names can change on a whim. I still think we were better off using the thing type numbers and having redirects to those numbers than the other way around. Not only for consistency, but simply because the numbers are a constant, and the names are not. ~RobTalkContribs 14:37, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Actually, this would make things a lot easier when Neo should change the config again. I didn't think of that. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 14:46, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
That was precisely the reason I wanted to do it...the names of Things and Sectors change all the time, but their numbers have been the same since the release of 2.0.X. If we were to set it up like the linedef list page, changing the names would be easy, because they wouldn't actually be the page number or the link...they would just be included right next to the number, which IS the link. If nobody has any more objections, I'm gonna go ahead and do this once I've straightened out all the linedef pages (which shouldn't take too long). Fawfulfan 15:57, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
Bear in mind that there is much more to it than you might think at first. All incoming links have to be changed, and all existing redirect shave to be renamed. It will take a lot of work. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 16:04, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
Uh, please only change the Sector Types page when all pages have been moved. This way, the page doesn't get any red links and remains functional. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 16:13, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm aware how much work it'll be. Also, don't worry...I'm handling the transition very smoothly. People will notice that a change is underway, but they won't have any trouble accessing the pages they want. Fawfulfan 16:14, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Oh, and one more thing: I think that the naming convention for samples of sectors should be "ex_stXXXXX...", not "ex_stXXX...", because the sector type numbers go up into the tens of thousands. Fawfulfan 16:28, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Oh, I'm sorry, I made a mistake there. Actually, my system worked a bit different, taking into account the different groups, but I wanted to reorganize it to reflect just the sector type numbers anyway. Yes, it's supposed to be "ex_stXXXXX", of course. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 16:30, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

New Warning Template

I have created a new warning template for pages, which can be used whenever a sample or samples on that page do not follow the naming guidelines we set up. To add it onto a page, just type {{bad sample name}}. Fawfulfan 12:32, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

I see what you're going for with the new template, but its hardly useful. Non-maintainers can't rename samples, and I have a list with all samples that should be moved anyway. Oh, and by way: Why did you change "Bustable Block Sprite Parameter" to "Bustable Block Sprite Picker"? The config gives the first. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 12:34, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, they can still replace samples, even if they can't rename them. The template says to rename OR replace the samples. Also, I was pretty sure that it's now "Sprite Picker", but if I'm wrong, by all means change it back. Fawfulfan 12:36, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
It was "Picker" before and is "Parameter" now. I already changed it back, I just wanted to note it here because the rollback function doesn't let give an edit summary. Regarding the samples, I don't want to encourage people to replace samples that are already there. This only creates unnecessary files, and it is a lot of work to put the template on all pages that need it. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 12:40, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Oh by the way, why are you removing the "__NOTOC__" from the sector type pages? They are so short that a Table of Contents is usually not needed and unnecessarily clutters the page. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 12:42, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Linedef Types 900 Through 909!?

I've never heard of those linedefs! Are they specified in a new, just-released DB config file? Fawfulfan Fawful Laughing.gif Want to talk? 22:18, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Hey, What Happened to All the Image Templates?

The main page is suddenly bare, and my signature image has been removed. Why is all of this suddenly gone? Fawfulfan Fawful Laughing.gif Want to talk? 17:16, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

That happened when I import a new CSS style for a template Digiku made. You might have noticed how the formerly blue dots on the sidebar are now gray, for example. I don't know why that removed the images for the main page, but I guess that's responsible for it. I'll ask Digiku to look into it once I see him, but in the meantime we'll have to live with that. It's a small cosmetic problem after all. Regarding your signature image, Inuyasha deleted it because it's a personal file unnecessary for the Wiki. Host it somewhere else and link to it in your sig please. You can also click on the red link to see the deletion message. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 17:25, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Thought so. Anyway, everybody can upload pictures, and I don't see why you should be the only one responsible for that. Also, please improve your grammar and spelling, I can barely read anything. Also sign your talk page posts with --~~~~ please, it makes it easier to see who made what comment when. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 09:10, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Banned

Hey SpiritCrusher why banned the Knuckles The Echidna ? dark dark dark.... LIGHT! 11:32, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Because he broke several rules multiple times, and made 25 new accounts even though he was banned. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 11:50, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Oh know, and he was banned Infinite ? Why he is my friend, don't like that he was Banned. dark dark dark.... LIGHT! 12:10, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
I don't care if he is your friend, but we gave him way too many chances already. He tried to evade his ban 25 times, even though we told him to stop, he tried to log in to my Message Board account, he even tried to change passwords for other Wiki accounts. He had his chance, but he screwed up much more than I thought was possible. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 12:26, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Is really yes,now reply me one thing:He was Banned INFINITE why the server his is very good.dark dark dark.... LIGHT! 12:46, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

His server being good means nothing. He was originally blocked for numerous cases of recreation of deleted pages and other rules defiance, and that block was made permanent after he got himself permanently banned from the MB as well for similar reasons. 犬夜叉(Inuyasha) 12:54, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
That said, his ban from the Master Server has nothing to do with the Wiki, and I have nothing to do with it. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 12:55, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
He isn't banned from the Master Server. It's a separate entity from both of these places (naturally) and at the moment, there's nobody on the MS ban list. I think it's moreso that he was trying to say we should unban/unblock him because he runs a (subjectively) good server. 犬夜叉(Inuyasha) 12:59, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Oh and when he go be unbanned ? *udl* 17:16, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Are you serious? He's been so much of a problem to the Wiki that I doubt he'll ever be unbanned now. =/ --Monster Iestyn Talk18:52, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Regarding the Tortured Planet Pages...

In general, I really appreciate everything you've done to help get this stuff documented. However, there is one thing I would like to address. Perhaps this is a nitpicky and petty thing to quibble over, but I prefer Spacewalk Zone being abbreviated as "SZ" rather than "SWZ". After all, "Spacewalk" is used here as a single word.

That's all. Thanks again for the tremendous support you've given me in this project in all it's stages! FawfulfanWant to talk? 12:22, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

I abbreviated it as SWZ following the same logic as GFZ's abbreviation. I don't really like two-character abbreviations if they can be avoided, because they are more ambiguous. "SWZ" makes clear that Spacewalk Zone is meant, and removes the likelihood of mistaking it for a misspelled Snowcap Nimbus or Star Showdown. Of course, if you really want to, go ahead and change the abbreviation, since it's your mod, but I personally think SWZ just might be a bit clearer. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 12:35, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Feeling Bad About the Wiki

Guys, how did you do this to reopen the wiki?! I kinda felt bad that it shut down... Super Chris 22:42, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

The wiki wasn't actually "shut down," the entirety of srb2.org went down for a week for maintenance due to hard drive issues. For more, see this update on srb2.org. Also, it seems your alternate account is still blocked until the 25th, so I would advise not editing the Wiki until then. ~Katmint 00:42, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

An idea for pages on levels

I was wondering if it might be a good idea to include a "Ring Count" number in the information for levels. It would be useful to anyone hoping to get a Perfect Bonus on a specific level. FawfulfanWant to talk? 14:12, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Inuyasha promised me a million times to write a tool that counts all Things for a level and make a table out of them. He just didn't make it until now, because of "priorities". --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 15:23, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

State Tables

User:Monster Iestyn/Sandbox#State Tables

We have actual working collapsible tables here now - how about placing these with their respective objects around the wiki? =P --Monster Iestyn Talk20:08, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Nice work! Sure, add them to the respective articles. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 20:55, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Hey, what about States Table having some links to other lists, such as List of Actions and List of States? --Ezer'Arch|עֶזֶר'AρχTalk 15:28, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

I think the actions that are mentioned in these tables should be linked it. I don't think it's necessary to link to the list of states, because that includes less information that what the tables provide. --SpiritCrusherTalkContribs 15:39, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Response to my message

Hello, SpiritCrusher. Thank you for admiring my work. (I know you're not trying to sound ungrateful, and I understand) I've left Thing tables on pages that are in need of editing and let others who dig in further on their researches to find the flags, things, sprites, and map thing numbers. I'll also use that sample sentence you put so I won't forget next time.

And also, I will not cause any more melodramatic problems. I just want to edit my SRB2 knowledge to the wiki. Thank you for taking your time to read this. Super Player 00:53, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

I won't forget the note for future wiki purposes. I'm going to copy and paste that all over the wiki (So that it looks all the same) and I'm going to change whatever's in the tablets and get rid of the lists. I'm not trying to confuse you or something, but you know what I mean, right? Super Player 17:42, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Just to be sure...

SpiritCrusher, should I create the Normal Race Stage categories for this page? They're all red and are in need of editing. Super Player 17:47, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Since I'm the one to talk to now that SC's on vacation, I'll answer your question for him...

Sure, go ahead and create the pages if you want, and I'll fix them up if neccessary. Just make sure you use the new navbox templates for the Technical Data sections this time. ;) --Monster Iestyn Talk 17:58, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Undocumented stuff about Things/Objects

Hi SpiritCrusher, I'm back (sort of). Recently I decided to revisit the SRB2 source code and remembered there were some undocumented hardcoded stuff about some Things (Objects, actually). The thing is (no pun, I swear), it is not some flag that you switch on in the map builder, but actually something intrinsic to each Object itself which you would change via SOCs, and that affects all its Things inside a map.

As an example, all spring Objects can be changed via SOCs to propel the player as if it had jumped. This allows a Sonic player to thok after jumping on the spring and before hitting the ground, for example.

To set this behavior, open SOCEdit and save the default configuration of one of the spring Objects (MT_YELLOWSPRING, for instance) to a file. Then open that file and manually set the value of the PAINCHANCE attribute to any number not equal to 0 (which cannot be changed directly in the SOCEdit, I think).

In fact, this works for any Object that has the flag MF_SPRING, so it could also be used in custom springs for example.

Anyway, I was thinking about re-reading the source code more carefully to spot any more of these undocumented features, but that will take a while since I will have to peruse every Object state action, every use of each Object flag (this is how I found out about the springs), and sometimes every use of specific Object types because yay for hardcodedness (not).

I almost regret doing this because version 2.1 is coming and Lua will allow for a multitude of crazyness to be programmed into the game, rendering this obsolete. But not every one can actually program in Lua, and SOCcing is more accessible to some, so it is only fair that people get access to the full power of SOCs.

This is where I ask you for help. How should I go on writing about this kind of features? They are not about adding new content, but changing existing behavior. Does a simple textual explanation suffice in individual Thing articles? What if I find a reasonable amount of other features like the spring one, does it justify adding a separate page for all of them, or perhaps some new special table such as the ones for the Linedef specials?

What do you think? Thanks. --Ricardo [Contribs] [Talk] 18:49, 19 May 2013 (CDT)

Good to know

It is good to see someone decided to continue extreme upkeep on the Wiki after all these years. –SonicMaster 06:31, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

There should be an automatic https redirect

If you type wiki.srb2.org directly into a browser, the site will load with the less secure http version, which is not good for password security. If you type https://wiki.srb2.org, that still loads correctly, and properly secured. I don't know who the webmaster is at this point, but the site really should redirect to the https version automatically. –SonicMaster 16:23, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
